Teaching Conditional Forms to ESL Students
Conditional forms should be introduced to students once they are familiar with the basic past, present, and future tenses. While there are four conditional forms, it is best to start off with the first conditional focusing on real situations. To help students understand, I find it helpful to point out parallels in future time clauses: Ill discuss the plan if he comes to the meeting.Well discuss the issue when he arrives tomorrow. This will help students with the structure of using the if clause to begin the sentence, in parallel with the same structure for future time clauses. If we finish work early, well go out for a beer.When we visit our parents, we like to go to Bobs Burgers. Once students have understood this basic structural similarity, its easy to continue on with the zero conditional, as well as the other conditional forms. It is also helpful to use other conditional names such as real conditional for the first conditional, unreal conditional for the second conditional form, and past unreal conditional for the third conditional. I recommend introducing all three forms if students are comfortable with tenses, as the similarities in structure will help them digest the information. Here are suggestions for teaching each conditional form in order. Zero Conditional I recommend teaching this form after you have taught the first conditional. Remind the students that the first conditional is similar in meaning to future time clauses. The main difference between the zero conditional and a future time clause with when is that the zero conditional is for situations that dont happen on a regular basis. In other words, use future time clauses for routines, but use the zero conditional for exceptional situations. Notice how the zero conditional is used to underline that a situation does not regularly occur in the examples below. Routines We discuss sales when we meet on Fridays. When she visits her father, she always brings a cake. Exceptional Situations If a problem occurs, we immediately send our repairman. She informs her director if she cant deal with the situation herself. First Conditional The focus in the first conditional is that it is used for realistic situations that will take place in the future. Make sure to point out that the first conditional is also called the real conditional. Here are the steps to teaching the first conditional form: Introduce the construction of the first conditional: If present simple (then clause) future with will.Point out that the two clauses can be switched: (then clause) future with will if present simple.Note that a comma should be used when beginning the first conditional with the If clause.To help students with the form, use a first conditional grammar chant to repeat the construction.Use a first conditional worksheet to ask students to practice the form.Create a first conditional chain by asking each student to repeat the result of what the previous student has said in the if clause. For example: If he comes, we will have lunch. If we have lunch, well go to Riccardos pizzeria. If we go to Riccardos pizzeria, well see Sarah, and so on. Second Conditional Stress that the second conditional form is used to imagine a different reality. In other words, the second conditional is an unreal conditional. Introduce the construction of the second conditional: If past simple, (then clause) would base form of verb.Point out that the two clauses can be switched: (then clause) would base form of verb if past simple.Note that a comma should be used when beginning the second conditional with the If clause.One problem with the second conditional is the use of were for all subjects. Third Conditional The third conditional can be challenging for students because of the long verb string in the result clause. Practicing the form repeatedly with the grammar chant and conditional chain exercise is especially useful for students when learning this complicated form. I suggest also teaching the similar form of expressing wishes with I wish I had done when teaching the third conditional. Introduce the construction of the first conditional: If past perfect, (then clause) would have past participle.Point out that the two clauses can be switched: (then clause) would have past participle if past perfect.Note that a comma should be used when beginning the third conditional with the If clause.To help students with the form, use a third conditional grammar chant to repeat the construction.Use a third conditional worksheet to ask students to practice the form.Create a third conditional chain by asking each student to repeat the result of what the previous student has said in the if clause. Descriptive Essay Myrtle Beach - 1447 Words
It was a beautiful sunny day and my family and I were driving on the expressway. We were in my Dadââ¬â¢s blue truck with the fifth wheel behind us. We had the windows down in the amazing 80 degree weather. We were around our exit, Myrtle Beach! I was so excited for the trip and couldnââ¬â¢t wait to put my foot in the blue, cold, salt water. After the like 15 hour drive we had just suffered through I was expecting a pretty great trip. We drove down the road and saw all of the familiar places like the Tanger mall, surf shops, Krispy Kreme, and even more of our favorite restaurants. I started to recognize the details that just seemed to tell us we made it to our destination. Like the palm trees, warm weather, beach smell, and of course what weâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦After we finished cleaning up and getting organized we hopped in the car for about fifteen minutes. We were on our way to the store or more specifically our favorite store ever Costco. We went there to get everything we would need for the week. Like food, swimming supplies, and sand castle equipment. When we were in the store we couldn t find this fifth wheel connecter thing for our sewer but we needed it. We ended up going on this big wild goose chase and we still couldnââ¬â¢t find it anywhere. My Dad called Myrtle Beach Travel Park and they ended up having it there. After we had finished shopping we went to a mexican restaurant we usual ly go to. When I get really hungry I like need food that second or I get sick, we call that a ââ¬Å"food panicâ⬠. So I was having a food panic and was like really hungry. I really like the restaurant because of the chips. I love the chips at mexican restaurants. For my main meal I got the best cheese quesadilla ever. The quesadilla was so cheesy that the cheese would stretch forever, there was this seasoning on it that made it really spicy. Overall the meal was really tasty. As we were leaving we saw a sign for a frosty on sale for 1 dollar. We went into Wendyââ¬â¢s and waited in line forever, or what seemed like it. When we finally got our frostyââ¬â¢s they were so good. I got chocolate and my sister, Mara got vanilla. I love chocolate anything and everything. I do feel that if someone commits murder or rape shouldnt be allowed to ever have a chance to do any of those crimes again. Currently today in the United States the laws vary from state to state on the age limits ranging from 16 in some states to 18 in most states, before someone can be considered for the death penalty for crimes they have committed. Setting examples of young murders would help deter other kids from thinking they are Juveniles and that they will only serve a very minimal time for their crimes. Another reason that the death penalty is best for Juveniles who murder is the chance of parole.

Students Skipping School Essay Example
Students Skipping School Paper Truancy has been a problem since the first schools. In the past, students were punished by parents and their schools for skipping. Today however, with many human rights laws and rules against punishing children (Parliament of Canada), truancy comes with almost no consequences and has grown in popularity (The Independent). Truancy is often caused by the students family problems, abuse and neglect, mental and physical health issues, drug and alcohol abuse, low self esteem, lack of friends, safety concerns and a number of other reasons. Some effects of truancy on students include involvement in crime, more likely to be unemployed, decreased academics, and risk of not obtaining a higher education (GTC Michigan). Truancy not only effects the truant student itself, but also an entire class, when a teacher slows down to help him catch up. Theoryà B.F. Skinner (1904-1990) was only concerned with observable behaviors, not the mental processes behind them. Skinner used animals to study how the use of rewards and punishment can influence behavior, which became known as operant conditioning. He performed the Skinner box experiment, where a rat in a cage must press a button for food to be released into the cage. After the food has run out, the rat stopped pressing the button after a few futile attempts. This is called extinction. Offer truant students a reward for perfect attendance for a certain amount of time. This may encourage them to attend school for the reward.à 3. Make students feel liked at school. To do this, teachers can display students work, be supportive of students, and engage students in group activities and clubs where they can be social and do work at the same time.à 4. Work together with the truant students families. Find out why the student skips school and figure out a solution to prevent or change this behavior. This is an effective method because the families know the students the best and can find productive solutions together with the school. 5. Find out why the students skip school and figure out a solution. Counseling groups and guidance counselors are very important for this role, but they must respect the students opinions and statements and work with them to fix their problems (client-centered therapy).à 6. Some students skip school because they are failing and see no point of returning to school. Teachers should give these students an opportunity to make up for their missing work and provide extra help at lunch or after school.à 7. Make sure that the school is a safe and positive atmosphere for all students. Teach students to respect each other through assemblies and in class work. Increase teacher supervision. Conduct student surveys to find out how they feel about the school environment. Be open to suggestions from students on how to improve the school environment.

Lord of the Flies Summary
'Lord of the Flies' Summary William Goldingââ¬â¢s 1954 novel Lord of the Flies tells the story of a group of young boys who find themselves alone on a deserted island. They develop rules and a system of organization, but without any adults to serve as a civilizing impulse, the children eventually become violent and brutal. In the context of the novel, the tale of the boys descent into chaos suggests that human nature is fundamentally savage. Chapters 1-3 The novel opens with a young boy named Ralph and a chubby, glasses-wearing boy as they walk onto a lagoon wearing their school uniforms. We soon learn that they are part of a group of boys who were evacuated during the war and who survived the plane crash that followed what they suspect was an enemy attack. As Ralph and the other boy that there are no adults around, they decide they must attract the attention of any other surviving children. Ralph locates a conch shell and begins to blow into it, summoning the other boys with the noise. The chubby boy reveals that the other children used to call him Piggy. Ralph believes rescue is imminent, but Piggy argues that they must get organized because they may be stranded for some time. The other boys choose Ralph to be their leader, although the choice is not unanimous; the choir boys, led by Jack Merridew, do not vote for Ralph. Ralph gives them permission to form a hunting group. Ralph quickly establishes a rough form of government and order, exhorting the boys to enjoy their freedom, work together for their mutual survival, and maintain a smoke signal on the beach to attract any potential rescuers. The boys in turn agree that anyone holding the conch gets to speak without interruption. Ralph, Jack, and a boy named Simon are the popular leaders and begin a tense partnership. They explore the island and confirm it is deserted, but locate fruit trees and a herd of wild pigs that Jack decides he and his friends will hunt. The boys use Piggyââ¬â¢s glasses to spark a fire, but Piggy quickly finds himself an outcast despite his friendship with Ralph. Simon begins overseeing the construction of shelters, concerned for the younger boys- referred to as ââ¬âºlittluns.ââ¬â¢ Chapters 4-7 The initial burst of organization doesnââ¬â¢t last long, however. Without adults, most of the boys refuse to do any sort of work and instead spend their time playing and sleeping. At night, rumors of a terrible monster in the trees sparks a panic. Ralph insists monsters do not exist, but Jack says otherwise. He claims that his hunters will find and kill the monster, which boosts his popularity. Jack gathers a group of boys for a hunting expedition, which takes them away from the job of maintaining the signal fire. The fire goes out. Shortly after, a boat moves past the island, but does not spot the boys thanks to the lack of fire. When Jack and the other hunters return in triumph with a pig, Ralph confronts Jack, complaining that they missed their chance at rescue. Jack, angry at his moment being ruined, knows he cannot fight Ralph, and so beats up Piggy, breaking his glasses. As the boys cook and eat the pig ravenously- ignoring warnings about eating undercooked pork- Ralph tells Piggy he wants to stop being the leader, but Piggy convinces him to stay on. Piggy is terrified at what might happen if Jack took over completely. One evening, there is a dogfight between planes near the island, and a fighter pilot ejects. Killed in the air, his body floats down to the island and becomes entangled in the trees. A boy sees his corpse and parachute and is terrified, convinced that he has seen the monster. Jack, Ralph, and a boy named Roger head off to hunt the monster, and all three boys see the corpse and run in terror. Chapters 8-12 Now convinced that the monster is real, Ralph calls a meeting. Jack attempts a coup, but the boys refuse to vote Ralph down, and Jack leaves in a anger, saying he will start his own tribe. Roger sneaks away to join him. More and more boys begin to sneak away to join Jackââ¬â¢s tribe, lured by the roast pigs that Jack and his hunters are able to provide. Jack and his followers begin to paint their faces, and behave in an increasingly savage and primitive manner while Ralph, Piggy, and Simon try to maintain a semblance of order at the shelters. Simon, who sometimes suffers mental attacks, goes off into the woods frequently to be alone. Hiding, he observes Jack and his tribe perform a ritual designed to satisfy the monster- they impale a pigââ¬â¢s head on a sharpened stick and leave it as a sacrifice. It quickly becomes swarmed with flies, and Simon hallucinates a dialog with it, referring to it as the Lord of the Flies. The Pigââ¬â¢s Head tells Simon he is foolish to imagine the monster is a flesh-and-blood thing; it is the boys themselves who are the monster. The Lord of the Flies then tells Simon that the other boys will kill him, because he is the soul of man. As Simon walks away, he comes across the dead pilot and realizes that he has found proof that the monster does not exist. He runs back to the other boys, who have begun to dance in a crazed ritual. When Simon begins crashing through the trees, the boys believe he is the monster, and all the boys- including Ralph and Piggy- attack him in terror, killing him. Meanwhile, Jack has realized that while the conch is a symbol of power, the true power lies in Piggyââ¬â¢s glasses, which is the groups only means of starting a fire. Jack has the support of most of the boys, so he conducts a raid on Ralph and his remaining allies in order to steal Piggys glasses. Ralph goes to their home on the other side of the island, a rock formation known as Castle Rock. He takes the conch and is accompanied by Piggy and just two other boys, twins named Sam and Eric. He demands that Jack return the glasses. Jackââ¬â¢s tribe ties up Sam and Eric, and Ralph and Jack engage in a fight. Piggy, alarmed, takes the conch and attempts to address the boys, pleading for order. Roger sneaks up above Piggy and drops a heavy rock on him, killing the boy and destroying the conch. Ralph flees, leaving Sam and Eric behind. Jack hurts the twins until they agree to join his tribe. Jack orders the hunters to go after Ralph, who is told by Sam and Eric that they intend to kill him and impale his head on a stick. Ralph flees into the woods, but Jack sets fire to the trees to drive him out. As the flames begin to consume the whole island, Ralph desperately runs. Hitting the beach, Ralph trips and falls, only to find himself at the feet of a British naval officer. A ship spotted the flames and came to investigate. All of the children, including Ralph and Jack, suddenly begin to cry, collapsing in exhausted grief. The officer is stunned and expresses disappointment that good British boys would fall into such a state of misbehavior and savagery. Then he turns and studies his own warship contemplatively.

Her father had been in a steamboat explosion which he had not survived when she was only seventeen years old. So she started working behind the counter as a clerk at a small cigar store called Andersonââ¬â¢s Liberty Street in Manhattan whose owner was John Anderson. He paid her an above than normal wages because her beauty brought in more customers than usual so sales were high. This was proven when fewer customers turned up on the day that she did not come for work. Mary had used her savings to buy her mother an Inn and it was there where the two resided. One of the customers living here was a young man called Alfred Crommelin who was a lawyer. He soon fell in love with Mary who rejected her, but he was gentleman enough to retreat without complaints. He moved out but the two remained friends despite his continuous love for the girl. The person who Mary did fall in love with despite his weakness of alcoholism was Daniel Payne who worked as a cork cutter. The two got engaged though the relationship was disapproved of by her mother Phoebe but life carried on. The first time Maryââ¬â¢s disappearance was reported was in the month of October in 1838 in the Sun. Phoebe had come across what seemed like a suicide note where Mary stated her wish to finish herself off. However, the young girl returned the next day saying that she had been only visiting a friend who lived in Brooklyn. It was said that the Sun had published a hoax to get some attention. Later, there were rumors that Anderson had created the story to gain more customers. She lived a normal life until the incident that took place during the summer of 1841 in New York City when she was announced missing from her motherââ¬â¢s home for the second time. After three days of search, her mutilated corpse was found. Her badly bruised body had been discovered f loating on the Hudson River near the Jersey shore, Crommelin having identified her. The hand prints around her neck proved that she had been murdered and not committed suicide. Investigations were carried out, several theories were provided by the police force as well as the journalists, and yet no one managed to discover for sure who exactly was responsible for such an act. Her fiance Payne was implicated but had an alibi to prove his innocence. Nonetheless, some weeks after Maryââ¬â¢s death, he took his life by drinking poison out of his love for his fiancee. The police thought that some members of a gang had tortured her, killed her and then dumped the woman in the River to rot. Later on, a woman called Mrs. Loss who was notorious in that area for her job of helping single pregnant women getting abortions made some revelations. She stated that Mary had conceived a child and had come to her with a dark, handsome man to get rid of the baby. This led to rumors that the abortion h ad led to complications leading to her death. However, questions were raised regarding the very obvious bruises on her bodies which showed that she had been killed in a very brutal and violent manner. Simon Flores Essay Simon De La Rosa Flores was descended from a family of artisans originally from Balayan, Batangas. Uncle Pio De La Rosa taught Simon the rudiments of the arts when he was in his teens. Later, he enrolled at the Academia de Dibujo y Pintura, studying under Lorenzo Guerrero and Lorenzo Rocha. Flores first gained attention in 1871 when the colonial administration commended him for the portrait of Amadeo I, which he presented to the province oil Pampanga. During this time he might already have made the acquaintance of Mons Ignacio Tambungui who introduced him to the wealthy families of several towns of Pampanga, for whom he executed many portraits and religious paintings. Simon married the monsignors sister, Simplicia. Flores must have executed as many as 20 portraits which include the two versions of the Familia Quiason, and the portraits entitled Miguela Henson, Andrea Dayrit, Quintina Castor de Sadie, Severina Ocampo de Arroyo, Anastasia Sandiko Panlilio, and Lucila Panlilio. All these are known for the fine miniaturistic detailing of the embroideries of the pina costumes of the sitters, their elaborate jewelry as well as the appurtenances in their homes. Among Simons religious paintings are El bautismo de Cristo (The Baptism of Christ), San Roque, Parabola de la mujer arrepentida (Parable of the Repentant Woman), La Inmaculada Concepcion (The Immaculate Conception), and two versions of La Virgen Maria, (The Virgin Mary), inspired by a painting of Carlo Dolci. He decorated the interiors of the churches of Bacolor, Betis, Mexico, and Santa Rita towns of Pampanga. He also did mortuary portraits. Only two of his genre paintings are known in existence, Primeras Letras, (Learning to Read), and Alimentando Pollos (Feeding Chickens). Simon Flores was the first Filipino oil native blood to garner a prize from an international exhibition. In 1876, he was awarded a silver medal at the Philadelphia Universal Exposition for his painting La musica del pueblo (The Music of the Town). In 1891 he won the highest honors for Despues de la Ultima Cena (After the Last Supper) and El Prendimiento (The Arrest) in the art contest to commemorate the tercentenary of San Juan de la Cruz. In 1895 he won a silver medal for La Expulsion (The Expulsion), his entry at the Exposicion Regional de Filipinas. Before his death, he was able to submit paintings for the Universal Exposition of St Louis, Missouri, USA including a portrait of Andrew Carnegie.

Thomas Hardyââ¬â¢s Tess Of The Dââ¬â¢Urbervilles (A Pure Women) - Do You Agree with Hardyââ¬â¢s Subtitle, A Pure Women? ââ¬ËTess Of The Dââ¬â¢Urbervilleââ¬â¢ was written by Thomas Hardy in 1891. Tess is the main character who gets exploited by the character, Alec. The question is whether Tess is pure or not. The subject of purity caused a lot of controversy in the Victorian times. The dictionary definition of the word purity is that if someone is pure they are innocent, fresh, virtues, chaste and very trustworthy. Thomas Hardy English poet and novelist, famous for his dispictions of the imaginary county ââ¬Å"Wessexâ⬠. Hardyââ¬â¢s work reflected his stoical pessimism and sense of tragedy in human life. In the Victorian times you were able to buy names depending on whether you were rich or not this will show if you have social status or not. Victorians believed that any man or women having a sexual relationship or sexual contact before marriage was seen as a sinner. If you pregnant and was not married society will not accept you they were very strict and very religious. In the Victorian times there were three classes. The Masses, the Nouveax Riches, and the Landed Gentry. The Masses were the poor working class, the Nouveax Riches were the people who worked in factoryââ¬â¢s In the city they get the new money and that is were the name came from, they were hated by the Landed Gentry because they were almost the same standard as them, the Landed Gentry were the rich people who didnââ¬â¢t work but got their money from their ancestors (old money). Tess is then captured and is hanged in the last chapter. Conclusion: To conclude I think Tess is a pure woman. I have shown how fate has taken a major part in her life. Thomas Hardy is a person who wrote most of his novels in a pessimistic way. His view on life and in women was completely different to the rest of the society; he reckons that men and women should have an equal right. The reason why he wrote ââ¬ËA Pure Womanââ¬â¢ as his subtitle is because he wanted to put it out to the rest of the society and because this is a question everyone wants an answer to. Poem Comparison Essay
All four poems that I read are related in their purposes and goals; however, they are also very different. ââ¬Å"Lucinda Matlockâ⬠by Edward Lee Masters, ââ¬Å"Chicagoâ⬠by Carl Sandburg, ââ¬Å"Richard Coryâ⬠by Edwin Arlington Robinson, and ââ¬Å"We Wear the Maskâ⬠by Paul Laurence Dunbar are all about the joys and sorrows of life. How we look at life makes life good or bad. ââ¬Å"Lucinda Matlockâ⬠is a story of a woman, who, by some standards, would have a life that we consider a mediocre. However, the narrator of the poem says that it was a good life and that life can only be truly appreciated if it is taken from you. ââ¬Å"Chicagoâ⬠by Carl Sandburg is the most closely related poems to ââ¬Å"Lucinda Matlockâ⬠. In the poem, the people of this city are dirty, ââ¬Å"evilâ⬠, and happy. The people are not saying to themselves, ââ¬Å"Well, my life is horrible because this is where I live and this is my underpaying jobâ⬠. They are laughing and joyous because they have life. ââ¬Å"Chicagoâ⬠is unlike ââ¬Å"Lucinda Matlockâ⬠because Carl Sandburgââ¬â¢s depiction of life in Chicago is so much more cynical than that of Masterââ¬â¢s more optimistic characterization and depiction of life in the world. ââ¬Å"Richard Coryâ⬠is a poem about an aristocratic man that under- appreciates life, and, as a result commits suicide. The narrator talks about how envious he/she is of Richard Cory. Only in the very end do they mention the fact that he is actually a very sad man. This poem is a representation of the front that some people put up to hide their inner selves due to embarrassment or many other feeling of despair. Finally, we read ââ¬Å"We Wear the Maskâ⬠by Paul Laurence Dunbar. This is very similar to ââ¬Å"Richard Coryâ⬠in its message. The message is again that there are some who sometimes cloister their inner selves behind a barrier of a fake personality. In the poem, Dunbar writes: ââ¬Å"Nay, let them only see us while/ We wear the mask/ We smile, but oh greatà Christ, our cries/ To Thee from tortured souls arise.â⬠The second part of the quotation says that they have tortured souls. They smile to hide their pain and they cry to Christ for help. All of the poems share the common theme that ââ¬Å"life is what you make itâ⬠and that people often hide their true identity behind a false one (As shown in ââ¬Å"Richard Coryâ⬠, ââ¬Å"We Wear the Maskâ⬠, and ââ¬Å"Chicagoâ⬠). Though the final two poems mentioned have more in common with each other than they do with the first couple poems that were talked about in class, all of the poems are similar in their ultimate subject matter.

Analysis of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight Free Essay Example, 1250 words
